Hi there,

I am about to start building a small extension to my house, i intend to do everything myself as my budget is very tight, my question is i will be putting a mon pitched roof on the extension to match the existing kitchen, does anybody know of any good websites that might be able to help me construct the framework ???

Well just want to know how to construct the rafters etc, do i need any special fixings etc ??

a lean-to roof is one of the most simple to build.

typically you will have a 4" x 3" tanalised wall plate sitting atop of the internal blockwork and a bearer plate sitting at a suitable height against the vertical masonry.

the bearer can either be below the rafters or at the rafter ends, it does not matter.

the rafters are birdsmouthed and spiked onto the wall plate and are spiked directly to the bearer - no birdsmouth necessary.

the ceiling joists require their own bearer and also sit along side the rafters on top of the wall plate.

Cheers for that Noseall,

even with my limited chippy knowledge that kinda made sense, are you just a jack of all trades or what ??

i construct medium sized extensions (£7000 - £45000) from foundations to finished plasterwork, doors hung, architraves and skirtings.

all in except for plumbing (heating) and electrics.

i do some final fixing work, i.e. laminate flooring, wall and floor tiling, but mostly have to move on to the next job.

we also offer to landscape whilst the 'other' trades are first fixing. this involves decorative garden walls, paving and fencing.

i started in the trade at 15. we did mainly bricklaying in the summer and renovations in the winter.

p.s. i really enjoy the challenge of the entire roofing part of a build - cut roofs that is. trusses are ok, but are a little dull.

batten and tile is ok but i do enjoy the leadwork.
an old school plumber has long threatened to show me his burning skills but i'm still waiting.

You see im fine with all the plumbing and plastering but im new to the bricklaying and roofing bits,

Not been in the game as long as you so it is really good to get advice from you guys, im starting foundations in 2 weeks time then the walls and floor will be started, so be prepared for some more questions my friend. :D

Hey, nose,
Please don't ever start repairing chess sets, I need the work.
