My neighbour has had a new roof and I noticed instead of using leading they have used some sort of concrete, see photo is this a new practice when tieing the roof to the chimney, I would have thought moisture would get in it and freeze which would cause cracking.... Anybody have and points of view?

I thought so I'm no roofer, but when I check my street nobody has their roof and chimney like that, suppose I better tell my neighbour

OP,
Ref the roof join:
Your roof is, of course, a little higher than the neighbour's roof, and how the roof planes have
been joined is blurred in your pic but it doesn't look right - can you post better pics of the join?
And pics showing the stack lead flashing & what looks like a fillet of sand & cement?
Whats happening on the other side of the stack and rear roof planes?
If "roofers" cut corners in roof work it might work for a while but it will eventually show below in leaks.
Leaks that can spread across & into a neighbours roof?

Thanks for that info, I've managed to upload more photos from the front, I spoke with my neighbour, the guys told him they had no lead so this is temporary and the job isn't finished yet, I don't think.he is impressed with them, I'll just have to keep an eye on things and keep you posted.

OP,
Your pics are not focused correctly.
The "explanation" in your last post beggars belief?
Its still not clear how the join was made on front or rear roof planes?
The lead flashing on the stack has not been installed properly - the S&C fillet will fail after a few winters.
"Foliage" is showing peeping over the top of the stack - an indication that the flaunching is perishing.

this is temporary
Nothing so permanent as temporary

He should withhold an amount of the payment, whatever it would cost to get someone else to go do that work; I'd budget about a grand

"I have no lead" is not a reasonable excuse. You know when you're approaching the chimney and you buy lead and bring it to the job. If you're a roofer you probably have rolls of lead in the van because you will always use it. Lead, by the way, looks best when it's under a side abutment tile, not splurged across the top of it, so you kinda need to buy lead in advance unless you're going to pull tiles off again, doh

If you don't have any lead you tuck some roofing felt in and tack it in place with a few off cuts of batten rather than make a "neat" chamfered fillet of mortar, that way you can say to the client "yeah that's just temporary" because it's obviously temporary, not this "hope no one notices" effort that's gonna leave bloody awful staining when hacked off

ps: double Romans in the middle of a terrace of smooth; ugh. And they could at least have charged the extra hour necessary to point the entire face of the chimney over onto the neighbour's side too; pointing a third the way along just looks gash. Ey well, time heals all

Thank you for all your input it really is appreciated, it's good to have a second opinion, I'm having my chimney capped and pointed next year so I will make sure its all done, I have a price of £450.00 and it's held until next year, I'm guessing that's about right.

I've just noticed the roofers are back and they are putting lead over the concrete, do you think this will be acceptable?

Yes agree about the double Romans, only one in the street, I think it's because the guys found it easier to install, one of the guys dropped a load whilst installing, god knows what would have happened if someone had been passing underneath.
