Mortar Mix HELP

Hi

I will be mixing mortar to build a garage using a cement mixer using a 4 to 1 mix, is this okay and do any additives need to be added, if so why?. Blocks will be rendered afterwards.

a plasticiser additive will make the compo, MUTCH easier to use.

5 to 1 is more than strong enough.
I find 6 to 1 is just fine.
(Together with a good plasticiser)
