WOULD LIKE TO DO A HAND CUT MOSAIC DESIGN ON HIGH TRAFFIC FLOOR . NOT SURE ABOUT TILE OPTIONS. WILL ITALIAN SMALTI OR OTHER SMALL THIN TILES CRACK UNDER PRESSURE?

Depends how well you bed them. The usual method of applying adhesive with a serated spreader leads to ridges that the tiles sit on. Usually this gives the advantage of some "adjustment" of level when putting the tile on. If it's too proud then more pressure will squeeze the adhesive into the troughs. The down side of this is that, even once the tile is bedded, it is not 100% in contact with the adhesive.

In your case, what you want to aim for is 100% solid contact with the adhesive. This can be acheived by spreading a thin bed of adhesive on the floor, evenly and flat, then buttering each tile as you lay it. Remove the excess adhesive that squidges out of the sides.

Work on a small area at a time and occasionally level the work by laying a piece of wood across the area and tapping gently with a mallet. finally make sure that you grout well.

The combination of the small tile sizes and the solid incorporation into the floor, allows even thin tiles to be used.

I daresay there are other methods but, my sister did it this way in her hallway and ended up with an fabulous result. (took her a few weeks mind).
