I wondering if anyone knew of any special precautions that must be taken before installing tile on concrete over 120 years old. The area to be covered is also in the basement, which made me wonder about moisture issues as well. If anyone could give me some helpful tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

Completely depends upon the moisture levels. Options.

Have the basement tanked.
Depending on the sub base, put down a DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) over the whole floor, screed and tile.
Cover generously with PVA and tile.

It really depends on how bad the situation is though, which obviously I can't tell.

(In additon to this I'm not a professional, so I would seek prof advice first)

One option that wouldn't raise your floor level too much would be to buy a tanking kit as used for wet rooms, apply to the floor & turn it up the walls.

This comes complete with all primers mesh ect and is ready to tile straight onto and only comes out about 3mm 1/8" thick.

Not sure whats available in USA but have a look here under preparation products

Please note that some manufacturers DO NOT reccomend the use of PVA as a primer for their products.
