moss on roof

Hi everyone.

Has anyone had any luck with killing moss on a roof by spraying it with weedkiller..if so what did you use. It is very thick in parts.

Any info gratefully received.

Rumour has it a length of copper pipe on the ridge tiles stop's moss from forming. Don't ask how i know i was told and tried it, was pleasantly surprsied.

A copper ridge is very effective but a few clients of mine have tried it and its only worked for about 3/4 years.

MMC pro is a good moss killer for hard surfaces, weedkiller and moss killer are totally different.

I imagine bell824 that the copper discharges some toxin that kills the moss, and its definitely worth a thought.
merlin the problem with leaving it is that it washes off in great clumps in the heavy rain and blocks the guttering up then I have to listen to dripping water all night which is not good.

dont know the chemistry between it but yes the copper stopr's plant matter from feeding,
have even known of people hammering in copper nail's to the roots of old oak's to kill them so they can have them removed.

does it kill whole trees....one in my neighbours garden is starting to block my lovely view .......
as if I would even think of it

as above seems to poison the living matter, although with larger trees i think it takes a bit of time (year or two untill full death)

copper on the ridge tiles works because every time the piikeys go up to steal it they dislodge the moss.

Most house's now have copper water pipe that bodes well for the future.

Why do you want to rid your roof of the moss Susie,is it causing a problem?

Its not just copper, if you look under dormer windows where there is lead flashings the run off from them kills moss too.

Moss endlessly blocks gutters, leading to potential damp problems.

A herbicide will kill it but will take a few treatments if its very bad. The best scenario would be scraping the worst of it off and then treating with a moss killer.

Our next door neighbour had her roof sand blasted to clean it up,I can't find a link to the company that done it.
