I’d like to replace all of my external 40 mm waste pipes; kitchen drain, washing machine, bathroom sink & bath/shower, with something that is going to last.

The solvent weld stuff that is readily available from the sheds seems to last a couple of years before breaking down and becoming brittle.

Therefore can anyone recommend a make that is available from a national plumbing supplier or at a pinch online?

I appreciate this stuff dosent last forever, but surely a decade without issue is a reasonable expection isn’t it ?

No preference on colour, although I’m leaning forwards black and push fit or solvent weld is ok.

I did search the forum, but couldn’t seem to find anything on this subject so apologies if the quality brands are well known…

Many thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what pipework you may have but it may not be modern ABS solvent weld if it is breaking down and going brittle after only a couple of years. Most modern ABS plastic now have additives in them that make them a lot more UV stable than older ABS and they should last a lot longer than a couple of years.

PB is the one that if very sensitive to UV and that why to always avoid using push fit and compression couplers outside unless they are painted with an oil based paint. That and of course environmental impacts - exposure to UV light, temperature swings etc can all degrade any plastics and colours, darker colours tending to be more resistant

Of course all plastics will eventually degrade over time.

Madrab, I appreciate the reply.

Current install is a mixture of Polypipe and Floplast, but they both seems as bad as each other.

I’d guess the oldest pipework is 5 years and it’s looking seriously ropey - if I brushed against it I’m sure it would break which is why I want to replace the lot…

I read sometime ago that Marley was the go to brand, but although still about it seems the company has been sold. Is this a brand still worth seeking out?

By comparison the Terrain guttering is still going strong after 30 + years and although a couple of the down pipes are a little faded it’s still flexible and doing it’s job…

I have some outside with push fit that I have to replace every few years. I always understood that the black and grey was between in the sunlight but I like the white. And I dont have a lot to replace.

Is it the push fit connectors that you need to replace or the actual pipe?

Its really the pushfit fittings that go as they break and crumble at the little snap on (manufacturer )collar bit, the bit on the end. But the pipe is not far behind in turning chalky then it starts to look manky on the chalky bits. I think the pipe is just thicker.

Cheers.

I have to admit that at home I used a plastic compression fitting outdoors but I painted it to stop it from becoming fragile.

White pipe and pushfit outside is not a good recipe.

On a showery day: rain/sun you can hear all the plastic on the outside of a property creaking and squeaking.

Gutters especially. This give you an idea of the expansion and contraction it goes through on a daily basis.

Add UV to that and it's a hostile microclimate that most of us are never aware of... Then factor climate change in!

The creaking is the black plastic gutter which is designed and fitted to do just that.
Thinking about it why dont they make brown 40/32mm and fittings to blend in with the bricks.
