Took my 6 year old TD Peugeot Boxer for and MOT today and they advised me that in order to do an emision test they have to over rev the engine beyond its normal operating revs for x amount of time. They had to tell me just incase the belt snaps. Is this right? I have never heard of this if thats the case. Anyone?

If they are saying it needs to revved over its maximum operating speed, find another garage.

But I have always thought that it is best to service your car just before the MOT, so it can better stand the antics of some garages when doing the emissions test.

I think they have worded it slightly wrong, they do have to rev the engine upto the built in limiter which is safe on a well maintained fault free engine, but they do warn you just incase something goes wrong.

Its a built in disclaimer as the engine has to be revved up to its limited maximum three times to allow for a particle test to be effective.....if the timing belt lets go, then its your problem.
Its simply ridiculous - revving any engine up to the max off load. Many testers realise this, and only rev up for very short bursts.

watched mine been done, like already said, they take it up to the limiter, but its not held for any length of time (just bounced off it really). mine passed on the second go.
