My mum has moved into a house with mould in a walk-in cupboard where she keeps her clothes. Wonder if anyone can suggest the best way to get rid of it?

There is an air vent in there at present, but it doesn't seem to be keeping the mould at bay.

A damp expert has been to look at it and says it is condensation. He suggested an extractor fan is fitted.

But when the electrician came to carry out the work, he suggested the vent was blocked up.

Then a surveyor got involved who said this would make the problem worse.

So we are at a loss as to know whose advice to follow and how best to tackle the problem. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The most common cause of damp in houses is condensation, and the most common cause of condensation is draping wet washing about the house, closely followed by using bath or shower with no extractor fan.

Condensation commonly occurs in and behind wardrobes where there is a cold external wall.

Ventilation to the outside air will allow warm moist air from the house to escape, and/or cold dry air from outside to come in. Either or both will combat condensation.

It sounds to me like the electrician was ill-informed.

If wet clothes or steamy bathrooms are a cause, put a stop to them, otherwise it will be impossible to cure the damp.
