He knows that labour is about to get obliterated, and he's going to go down in history as the man who caused it. His obsession with hanging onto the PM's job is going to haunt him the rest of his life. If he a called it a day months ago, and let someone else take the job (although i object to unelected prime ministers). His successor might have been able to turn it round and do soem damage limitation.
Depending how badly they do, civil war is going to rip labour apart after the election, because the hard line militants in UNITE and GMB now control 167 MP's and they are going to eject New Labour and turn the party back to 70's socialism - they have stated as much in leaked emails - and if they have to stage a Winter of Discontent, then thats what they will do. Brown has already got factions with knives out for him (remember the leadership challenges ?), if labour come third a bloodbath will ensue. The communist union hardliners have always hated New Labour. Whatever happens, if Labour arent returned to power, Brown is a Dead Man Walking one way or another.
At this rate you might even get a Tory government with a LibDem Opposition, and Labour with less than 150 seats.
