Apologies if in the wrong Forum, but this seemed the most appropriate...

I want to install some outside spotlights --- I've chosen the style and they are available either using 240v GU10 or 12v MR16 bulbs.

Irrespective of issues of using mains voltage outside etc, which would provide the brighter light? Can someone explain, from a purely lighting perspective, on the pros and cons of low voltage versus main voltage.

Many Thanks

Paul

mains voltage every time.

easier to wire
less to go wrong
easier to dim
can use energy saving GU10s in them (not with a dimmer though).

I prefer the crisper light an MR16 ELV lamp produces.

Its just a matter of personal choice really.

12v lamps give a whiter and brighter light than 240v. You can still dim them using the right transformer/dimmer. Depends on your preference. 240v are a more mellow yellow.

I also prefer 12v (MR16), but only where each lamp has it's own transformer.
Crisper light colour, brighter light & lamps last longer

GU10 fluorescent halogens give whiter lights then the others full stop

who is MR Sixteen eh?

       ;)
