Recently my Gloworm back boiler has started to sound like a steam engine when the burner is running. The noise will die off after about 3 or 4 minutes and the burner will continue running. The functionality of the boiler does not seem to be effected with both hot water and heating performing fine. The noise is somewhat disconcerting!!!! :(

Any Ideas???

Your heat exchanger is past it. You need it replaced. If it sounds like a kettle boiling it means big money! You boiler needs to be removed and a new heat exhanger installed around £740 supply n fit. Might be better off with a new back boiler! However if you havent the cash, find your pump drain the system down and squirt some washing up liquid in the pump around 3 full quirts. Re-fill the system and switch it on, the liquid will RE-COAT the heat exchanger and the noise will go. However i wouldnt do it but i know it works. But again i wouldnt do it, if your planning for a replacement what you got to lose!

You can get a boiler silencing chemical which would be better tand using washing up liquid. Washing up liquid has a lot of salt in for one thing, and it doesn't do heating systems much good.
