my door will not lock

I have a upvc door. I can move the handle up. The key will turn but will not lock. I can lock from inside but cannot remove the key but outside it wont lock. Can anybody help. Can this be fixed or will I have to buy a newdoor

Does the door look wonky? Perhaps it dropped a bit, making it very tight. If that was the case you could adjust the hinges.

the door does not lock wonky and i can see. The lock turns 3/4 of the but does not go all the way around also the other door makes a click sound when being locked but this one doesnt

you won't have to buy a new door. Maybe someone on here can describe how to adjust or repair it; otherwise, there will be a local man who specialises in adjusting and repairing plastic doors and windows. There is sure to be one, because they are quite troublesome. You don't need one of the big companies. If you ask around friends and neighbours you may get a recommendation.

i have looked at the door. The things on the on the side f the door move. I was wondering if i could have that thee barrel may be broken and needs to be replaced. the door opens and closes fine but it just wont lock. The key will turn the barrel but does not click or turn more than 3/4 of the way. Has anybody had a problem like this

You probably have a "euro cylinder" then.

Remove it and see whether the key can now turn it fully round in both diections and try this with the key in either end. If you can't turn it freely, then you need a new "euro cylinder". If it does turn freely round and round (and the key inserts and exits smoothly), the the euro lock is fine and something more expensive is at fault. Could need a new gearbox for example.

A new euro cylinder can be had for less than a tenner for a 'normal' one, all the way up to about 40 quid for a better security one (Avocet ABS euro cylinders for example). They are a standard shape, so any brand will fit your door, you just need the two seperate length measurements to be dead on. Fitting it yourself is easy, as you've probably just seen in the vid.

A new gearbox can range between about £30 and up to £100, but you would have to dismantle it to try and find a make and model number on it somewhere, because it needs to be the exact right size to fit, so it's easier to just buy the exact model number that you already have. You might be able to make out a manufacturers logo on the side of the door, which will give you a better idea of what it'll cost for the parts.

These prices are just for the parts, I don't know what a locksmith would charge for fitting a new gearbox, they would have to visit twice, once to find out the model number and again to fit it.

Gearboxes don't tend to wear, but the bars that slide up and down at the edge of the door can break, but screwfix sell a new assembly for about £65 code (code 90215)

It's more than possible that the door has dropped slightly with age on the handle side. As you turn the handle, the pins that lock into the door frame move up into their "lock" position, but if the door dropped, then the pins and the sockets on the frame no longer align properly. If you mark the frame where the pins should locate, and then at where the pins actually are, you may find the mismatch. If this is the case, you unscrew the lugs on the frame, and move them one below the handle down slightly, and the ones above the handle up a little.
