My kitchen refit.

Did a little bit of painting today and fitted the hood chimney properly but when I removed the protective film, in the right light I found a little dint in it that obviously wasn’t visible with the wrap on. Going to have to get on to them tomorrow to get it replaced. I bet that is going to lead to an argument as they unboxed it when it arrived to check it but obviously you can’t see what’s under the film/wrap.

Just as I was going out this morning, the worktop fitters turned up! Their boss had forgotten to tell me. Anyway, worktop and upstands fitted, taps fitted, hob in AND WORKING! They did a bloody good job too. The missing cabinet has arrived and the extractor manufacturer is sending me a replacement chimney. It’s starting to look like a kitchen now. I’m getting my 'finish the job' mojo back.

Major schoolboy fùck up today. Waiting for some filler to dry so I thought I’d put the plinths on. Couldn’t be an easier job. First I cut the sink plinth to size, tried to fit it but it was too tall. I cut about 20mm off of the top, fitted it, perfect. Next, the 800 unit and 800 drawer unit. 1600 in total. Cut that, took the same amount off the top, fitted it, perfect. Couldn’t do the fridge/oven/larder assembly as I haven’t fitted the end panels on yet. Went and had a cuppa. Came back out to the kitchen and WTF - from the other side of the kitchen I could see a gap between the top of the right hand side of the 1600 plinth and the bottom of the cabinet. Whilst my worktop is dead level, my bloody floor isn't - there was a 6” gap between cupboard and floor at the left side of the plinth and near on 7” at the other end. You can see it in the picture below. We've lived here since 1990 and I’ve never noticed it before. Looked ****ing terrible. I then walked to the end of the hall and looked into the kitchen and I could see a bloody great gap between the top of the plinth and the bottom of the sink unit. I screamed and cursed and I could have cried! Made me feel sick. It’s given me the right hump and I’m totally ****ed off with the kitchen now. It’s instantly turned from a pleasure into a chore. It’s going to be a slog to finish it now I’ve lost all heart in it. What didn’t help was Mrs Mottie saying she told me so - that I would start it and lose interest. It’s been a month today since I took the old kitchen out and I’ve been fine right up to this fùck up. The job's dragging now.

I assume you mean millimetres and not inches Mottie??

If so, buy some of these plinth strips which offer a nice seal between the plinth and the floor to stop crumbs and water getting under.

Crucially they’ll give you back a fair bit of height on your plinths so you can recut them at the correct heights/angles.

Or these: https://www.diy.com/departments/goodhome-steel-effect-plinth-strip/3663602643685_BQ.prd?alt=true

Glue one on the bottom of plinth and another to the top. With the top one tape it up to the bottom of the cabinets to effectively hide the gaps. Once the glue is dry and tape is removed it’ll look fully filled.
I’ve had to recut properly and join the two left-over ends in the middle of the two 800 units and cover the join with a piece of trim that came with each plinth. That’ll do for now - if I can’t live with it I’ll have to get new plinths.

Under the protective cardboard there is an LVT floor. The plinths are on top of the LVT.

I could have cheerfully taken a sledgehammer to it yesterday but I’ve slept on it and woken up in a better frame of mind today. Just hope I can remain that way. One more wall unit to fit but I have to modify it and remove a corner of it to fit over that stair stringer. Going to Take. My. Time!

Take it easy mottie.
Even professionals sometimes make mistakes, especially when working long hours.
If you replace the plinth, remember to cut the length first, then flip it over so the top part to be cut is on the floor and scribe it.
I bet you already know this (y)

Saw some results at last today! Fitted the fridge freezer in its housing ( only temporary at the moment as it will have to come back out for me to screw the end panel on), connected up the cookers and built up the larder unit. Mrs Mottie has actually given me some praise and the dog likes it too - just the right height for her to get at the dog treat box! :)

Mrs Mottie has done an awesome job there! You should be proud of her...

Just a few bits to go. A flyover between the wall units either side of the extractor, cornicing and pelmets. Task lighting, think about making an infill panel or possibly a wine rack in the space to the right of the wall units and shelving above the kettle/coffee machine and on the other side, end panels, cornicing, plinth and air vent to the fridge/cookers/larder unit and then finally fix the fridge in permanently, refit the skirting boards and a little bit of woodwork painting plus the inevitable snagging! Then I’ll take a break while Mrs Mottie decides what colour she wants it painted (white is just temporary while she decides!).
