Done a fair bit of reading and have come to some conclusions. Would be grateful if you could cast your eye over and offer thoughts:

Moving into a fairly large 4 bed 1920s solid wall house very soon. Currently a very old floor standing boiler with hot water tank in the bathroom. Gravity fed I'd bet. Currently just the 1 bathroom, however in the future I'll be banging in an ensuite. Family of 4, 2 young kids growing up fast.

In an ideal world, it looks like a heat only boiler with a megaflow type unvented cylinder. Possibly 200l ish. If I had a load of cash I would probably opt for this, but we have stretched ourselves for the move and are low on funds for the million things needing doing.

So I'm thinking of a compromise - the combi boiler! Looking at a Valliant 838 with the valliant 470 control with the outside temp sensor. Thoughts behind this are decent flow rate for hot water 15lpm (as combis go) and a bit of economy saving with the temp sensor.

Rather taken with the nest thermostat, simply because it is space age looking and can be smart phone controlled, although I do wonder practically how much I need to do that once set up! Either way I'm a glutton for gadgets!

Thoughts? Am I being short sighted with the combi? Will I be kicking myself in coming years or just get used to the slightly less good flow rate? I've got a Worcester combi now that does 12lpm and is fine unless someone turns on a hot tap - but I'm used to it. I'd guess I'd be looking at a 50% price hike for the unvented option....

Without knowing the performance of the water supply it is all rather academic. Personally, with a family of 4 I would not suggest a combi and wouldn't have one myself.

However, if you are aware of the limitations and performance then crack on.

Wouldn't have a Vaillant either BTW.... Intergas all the way.

Cheers Dan

I suppose I was expecting thoughts such as yours regarding combi vs unvented. Was kind of hoping all would say that the cheaper option was going to be best - haha!

I'll have a look at the integras.

Its not about best or worst.... but as the kids get older and assuming you're staying put for 10 years, then a back up for hot water is preferable.

We have a huge place in London running on a combi, and the customer didn't want to sacrifice the space for a cylinder. They've been happy with it for 7 years or so, but, we made it abundantly clear what the performance limitations were.

Remember this is fundamental/capital equipment for the house that results in major upheaval and inconvenience when it goes t|ts up. Why cut corners on this? Get the best you can afford even if it means sacrificing a big TV upgrade, or that little fancier family holiday?

The Ferroli Modena HE 38 is the mutts nutts and is quite possibly at the forefront of boiler tech right now.

If you like your gadgets and a bit of showing off then go for the Lamborghini Extrema 38C. Basically a badged up Ferroli but comes in 4 different colours and a Lamborghini badge for added WOW factor. (y)

Dan - fully agree with maxing out what we can spend as I do see the benefits.Just my maxing aint that max at present!

Aquaheat - I mentioned I like the idea of remote boiler control - not sure it extends to fancy colours and Lambo badge! The boiler will be located in the garage..... Will have a butchers at the Ferroli you mentioned. Might as well broaden my horizons as I thought it was all Worcester/Valliant....

To keep the cost down but have an acceptable supply of hot water, I would consider keeping the existing hot water set up that you have, with the present hot water cylinder feeding the existing bathroom and kitchen as it is. Then install a combi to heat the radiators and existing hot water cylinder, but use the direct hot water supply from the combi only for the new bathroom.

If then later you get the cash, you can replace the existing cylinder with an unvented one.

If you are really lucky you will find an eastern European in the box to fit it for you too. I know Ferroli had a couple delivered in a batch last year!

Also gives awesome bragging rights without having to lie. You can honestly be down the pub with your mates and tell them that you have a Lamborghini in the garage that you can control from your phone!
