I am trying to buy a 5" chuck backplate for a Myford ML8 woodworking lathe. Its a 1" x 12 TPI thread. I have tried google without any luck. the myford 7 has a 1¼ thread.

Have you tried Axminster?

I believe they make a lot of bits themselves, such as faceplates etc....

Thanks, just looked and they only have one at £53.95  no mention of size I would assume its a 4" without making a phone call tomorrow. for the Myford 7 they cost under £20.00.

The ones for the seven are produced in much larger quantities and probably knocked out in the far east. A genuine myford one wwon't be cheap either.

What type of chuck are you trying to fit, a lot of the woodwork ones you can just buy various threaded inserts for, I made one up to fit an axminster woodworking chuck to my engineering lathe.

I am getting a 4 jaw self centering chuck that I can also use on my other lathes so I must have a backplate. I am wondering if a faceplate would adapt ok as there is one on e-bay

Face plates are usually thinner with webs to stiffen them so not ideal. Also you don't really want to be continually taking the chuck off its backplate, usually once fitted they are never removed.

Also the 4jaw chucks used on wood lathes are quite different to those used on engineering lathes and a 4jaw self centering is not that often used on an engineering lathe anyway only really for production work where a lot of square stock is being used.

Hi Jasonb, every thing you have said makes sense, but I still like the idea of the four jaw chuck on the woodworking lathe. plan B is to fix a plate to the faceplate to make it thicker and machine it to fit the chuck. Any thoughts on this? :)
