Hi there,

We have discovered a couple of times now, when we've been in our lounge, these bizarre wet patches on the floor boards (we don't have carpet down.)

We think it occurs in other areas of the room as well (though in the past, we've thought that it was just a big patch of dribble from our baby son!)

We've got a rug in the middle of our room and it's never under there.

Is it condensation? Is it something we should worry about? It isn't just a little bit, the floorboards have sometimes been so wet that we will wipe with kitchen towel and the towel is really wet!

The house is fairly old by the way, about 120 years old, we've noticed quite a lot of damp when we've been ripping up carpet etc!

might be plumbing leak. might be child. might be puppy. might be dripping from the ceiling. might be coming from a radiator. might be rain getting through window, fireplace, roof.

have a look under the floor and see how wet it is

don't tell me you laminated the floor so you can't

you don't drape wet washing about the house, do you?

No, no washing in there, the patch this morning is nowhere near window or chimney breast (which is boarded up, but there is a damp problem there).

It is now completely dry - it just seemed to appear overnight, so this would indicate not a pipe?

No to pets, no it's not our baby either, its very mysterious!

Ha ha, I don't think it's ectoplasm, but you never know. It's certainly a bloody nuisance whatever it is.

maybe it drips through the ceiling when you use the bidet

Recently, we had a plumber over, who was replacing the gas pipe, and he had the floorboards up - nothing looked out of place (just looked like a load of rubble underneath!)

Thank you for responding normally though, I'm not quite sure why people continue to write strange responses - I suppose it must be funny to them maybe?

Is it possible that it could be just some sort of condensation, given that the room gets really cold (its north facing) and would that damage the floor boards?

Wet patches on floors are sometimes caused by condensation run off from windows, patio doors and walls.

it is very unlikely to be condensation, unless the house is very damp (I asked earlier if you drape wet washing about the house) but you should look under the floor again as there might be a leaky pipe or ground water underneath)

It is not UNusual for a leaky bath, shower etc to have water come through the ceiling. It will often form a puddle and tickle along the plasterboard until it finds a hole to drip through. It can come from a pipe, or trap, or overflow, or the gap where a bath or shower tray meets the wall.

if you habitually have a morning shower, that could account for the water seeming to appear overnight.

get up at intervals and check the floor.

Hi!

Do you have central heating?

If so, it may be that copper pipe was used and someone has accidently been going along nailing through the pipework when fixing down the flooring, or if you have a solid floor then they did not insulate the copper pipe from the concrete and the copper is now 'corroding' (for want of the correct terminology).

These are the most likely offenders!

Regards

You wont get condensation settling on a timber floor

The only explanation is something dripping, spraying or leaking onto it. But it would be helpful to know where the patches are in relation to the room.

In the meantime until this is explained, don't go into the light
