While in London, we went to Pizza Express in the Barbican. Outside, across the walkway, we could see a church tower that Will drew a picture of. Now home, we're looking up in books which church it might be, but can't seem to place it.

It's a long shot indeed, but does anyone know it?

been over thirty years since i was in the barbican so not sure where Pizza express is situated, but trying to visualise which way you were looking across the walkway, was it towards Moorgate tube station or the other way? mind you my memory suggests that one way you'd be looking at the flats so the view of a church spire would probably be obscured?

Can't see on the map, only certain areas seem to be covered.

However, Mrs Secure has beaten me to it & found it ( ):

It was burnt-out in WWII & now only the tower remains, on a trffic (is that triffic or traffic??) island.

It's now a private residence!

Thats a bit away from the barbican its nearer st pauls cathedral

Well, all I can say is it was very easy to sketch from where we were.

I wonder who lives there and how much it's worth?

Secure,
It looks a bit lost amongst all the 'modern' stuff around it.

I went to college and worked in that area, there is also a church that got forgotten about. It was disused, and the buildings around it were extended to block all access, so the church could not be seen. It was found again after (I think) the blitz removed some of the buildings around it.

there are a vast number of old churches and graveyards in the City, it is not usual during building works for one to be found, sometimes building workers will rummage around looking for gold rings or other jewellery, and turn up at the hospital later having picked up Plague from the remains  I was told there were a number of cases during the building of the big Council Flats estate ;) at the Barbican
