I own a 15 year old Electra awm 800 which is only 590 mm wide. It's died , and I need to replace it with something that is also 590 wide as the space won't accomodate something 595 wide.

I don't want one of these mini machines which only take 3-3.5kg of washing. I'd be very grateful for any info on a machine that will fit the pace.

Thanks

Thanks - I tried that. The best I found was the hotpoint WT540 - advertised on a website as 585mm wide - I thought all my problems were over! However I went into a store (Curry's who, instore also had it listed as 585 wide) to measure it and it is actually 595 wide - I couldn't get an explanation about why it was advertised as smaller.

is there no scope to move the cabinets 10mm !!!

could be achevied by moving cabinets into a space where theres a filling in piece
borrowing space from another appliance
or swapping a cupboard for a slightly smaller one

these ideas can range from very easy to nigh on impossible ;)

if for example you had a fridge space one cabinate away and you had space to move into the fridge space

the things that may stop a unit moving are secured to the worktop or wall [may not be obvious]
the shear weight of the worktop or cabinet contents
years of grease and rubbish sticking the units to the floor
floor coverings fixed after the units fitted causing a step

HI

Thanks for that...I think the space was originally built for a 595mm machine but when the kitchen floor was tiled the board on one side shifted in a few mm, so the only solution would be to get the tiles taken up, the partition moved and new tiles cut (assuming I still have some) and laid. I've not dismissed the idea out of hand..I was jut hoping there might be an easier solution. I can't quite believe I own the only 590mm washing machine on the planet!

ok just had a look at the washing machines on the comet web site to try and find a 580 machine after looking at the first 60 i lost the will to live :D :D :D

your right 595 0r 600s

Wow - thanks for that, shame no result. I've walked around Curry's (twice ) measuring all their machines (especially the hotpoint they said were 585mm..it wasn't), phoned hotpoint (who assured me it was actually 595mm), had a chat with the helpful man at Euronics, and went through all the measurement of the washing machines tested by Which?. Still no joy.

It's looking like the floor tiles will have to come up - all for the sake of 5mm!

Many thanks to everyone for their help.

I recall seeing an appliance fitted in a tight space by having its side panels removed slim it down. There are some appliances designed with this in mind.

Caple WMi2001 is quoted at width 590 and 6 Kg load.

There is a way to slim down a cabinet in situ if the the side wall is full height and not standing on the base of the cabinet. Cut some temporary supports to fit between base and shelf(s) and shelf(s) and top. Put them about an inch in from the edges. Remove the side panel and cut it into pieces that fit between base and shelf(s) and shelf(s) and top. Glue these in place as new walls and maybe also re-inforce the joins with small brackets.
