Hi,

I have an en-suite to do and we would like floor to ceiling tiles but as these are 10mm natural stone i'm worried about the weight on the walls. The shower enclosure is 900x1700x2400mm one wall is plasterboard (not plastered) on stud work and the other walls are original 1950's plaster on block work. My builder thinks the old walls are sound but that's a long way from being able to take the weight i'm thinking about.

What should I do?

Is my only choice to remove the plaster from all the walls? Or is there something I should screw on to them that will take the weight?

I would rather not pack the walls out to much as we're tight on room.

Is it madness having this type of tile floor to ceiling?

Thanks for any help.

plasterboard "unskimmed" can take 32kg per m2 this is including your addy/grout about 3-4kg.
you might want to look into backerboards..marmox/aquapanel/hardie..etc these will take a lot more weight per m2.
for the plasterwall maybe marmox board as you can dot/dab this on then mechincal fixing thro it.
some off the others b/boards you can only stud them out.
check side of tile box for the weight if not get the scales looked out. :D

Cheers, So I can easily replace my studded wall and replace with a backer board as that's yet to be plastered. But i'm kinda stuck with the other walls as I can't really loose any of the width in my en-suite. Guess my only option would be to remove the plaster and sand/cement backing

I looked at the marmox website – very confusing which board do you recommend? do I have to dot and dab it or can I just fix it with loads of mechanical screws????

check the weight of your tiles?
dont plaster around your wet area.
you will want to tank your wet area.
10mm marmox boards dot/dab then mechincal fixing, give their tech line a call if you will be using these.
or render your walls.
