I used to have a electric cooker and hob in my kitchen. I've now replaced the cooker and it's only a single oven instead leaving the old hob still in. The hob is plugged into the same 13A socket it's always been plugged in to, with is spurred from switched spur. Now I have an empty cooker connection unit I believe they are called, underneath. The cable on the new oven is a 2.5mm I think. Now I used to be a sparkies mate for a short while so I have a slight grasp on electrics. Putting this in the old cooker connection unit is a no, am I correct? It's a 6mm feeding the cooker connection unit. Should it not be fused to something smaller? Also there is no way down from above the worktop as the splashback is fitted against concrete wall. What's the solution to this?

If its a dedicated cooker circuit then put the appropriately rated MCB / fuse in at the CU. Or just wire it into the cooker connection unit, as long as the cable from the oven to the ccu is appropriately sized then it should be fine, it can't be overladed.

The cable from the consumer unit to the ccu is obviously way too big but I can't see any problem with the cable from the oven to the ccu as it's pre-wired when oven was bought. thanks for your reply by the way.

It doesn't matter if the cable is a larger csa than the minimum size required for a protective device. It may matter if it is too small.

See what the manufacturers instructions for the oven say and follow that. There will be a way to do it using the existing wiring.

Off the top of my head the oven load was about 12-16 amps. I'm pretty sure the circuit MCB is a 32A. So is it ok to put in a smaller MCB eg a 20A even though the cable is a 6mm?

No problem at all. As Sherbertlion has already said, it doesn't matter if a cable is too large, only if it's too small.

Your replies are much appreciated. The hob supply is just for the igniter yes. I'll just downgrade the MCB and should be fine. Thanks.

Right, just went to sort this out, the oven has been screwed & glued in so am unable to see what size it is. Theres a sticker on the inside front of the door that says 2.3kW. What size will the cable be? And do I need a 10A mcb or 16A. I have a spare 10A.........

I didn't really understand the post but -

The 10A mcb will be suitable or -

leave the mcb as it is and swap the cooker outlet for a socket and plug in the oven.
