I paid for vinyl flooring and arranged fitting. However, they pointed out my floor was not even, this is no stupidly obvious and I don't know why it didn't occur to me before! They say I need to lay 6mm plywood.

I don't own a jigsaw, can I use one of those little saws and do it by hand? I'm guessing it doesn't have to me really need as it's just a base for the vinyl?

I also looked up online how to lay the vinyl myself and it doesn't look too difficult, so I am thinking of trying to do this myself. Bit nervous though.

Thanks

The section on panel laying gives you some tips

Using a panel saw is fine , just cut the waste side of your line to get a good fit and measure twice before cutting

Use a power driver to fix the ply down and run your hand over the ply once laid to check for lumps and bumps and high spots, sand these off if you find any

Just take your time when cutting vinyl , rush it and you make a mistake

It's satisfying doing this kind of job yourself

Good luck!

When over-plying a floor for subsequent vinyl covering we always screw the boards on 150mm (or less) centres. That's over 150 screws a sheet , so make sure that you buy enough screws. If you skimp on this the plywood will potentially end up with void beneath it which can be felt and even seen through the finished floor. It is important to sink the screw heads dead flush as discrepancies will telegraph through the vinyl. If there are any other discrepancies (hollows, gaps in joints, screw heads sunk under too far, etc) they can often be taken out with self levelling compound. This requires a bucket, mixing paddle (or "whisk") and a drill to mix it then a float to spread it

If you current boards are uneven and you screw 6mm ply to it you will have a smooth but still uneven finish .

If it's still bad then that's best taken out with a skim of flexible SLC. Ply skin over boards smoothes out the worst of the unevenness.

If you are laying sheet vinyl, 4mm pre-wet hardboard will be fine and can be cut with a stanley knife.
