Need to move a double plug socket. Advice please.

Hi,

I need to move a double plug socket about 1.5m along the wall. The problem I have is there is not enough slack. I have pulled the floor boards up and there are two wires going to the socket. The wires colours are 2x red 2x black and 2 y/g ( in one sheathing ).

Can I pull both cables back and extend them using a junction box?

Any advice would be great

Can you get to where the two cables come from? If so replace from that point to the new location. Sorry but the rules state that junction boxes have to be accessible for inspection.

The best way to do this if you cannot replace the cables is to use 2 maintenance free junction boxes. These have push in connections and these are approved for use under floors as they do not need any access to them

Thanks for the reply. They seem to be going off in separate directions. I can trace one but not the other.

Was hoping there might be a simple fix for it. Don't really want to be pulling all the floor boards up in every room.

If you use a Maintenance free junction box then you can just joint them both , or if one goes the right direction just joint one and pull the other one back to the new socket position.


if you are jointing them then do not be tempted to just run one cable to your new socket position and join all three cables together in the JB. This makes it very hard for anyone to trace a fault if one should happen in the future.

Next problem will be finding a maintence free junction box, might have to go to a decent electrical wholesalers as i have not seen any in the DIY sheds .

Might be an idea to put one of these on your fuse box if it doesnt have one as i assume you will be extending the circuit using the new brown and blue colours

Makes sense. I'll put that on. Yes will be using the new colour coded cable for the extension.
