Is it necessary to sharpen the metal blade of a compact lawn mower like a Black & Decker one? or does cut the grass because of the slicing action anyhow?
Mine is developing teeth as a result of hitting a number of stones.

you should sharpen the blade of your mower so it cuts the grass cleanly.

If it's ragged, it will tear the grass and damaging it which is not the best for the health of the lawn.

if you have one a bench grinder

if you like risks an angle grinder

if your posh a dremmel with lawn mower blade sharpening attachment

Not quite sure what you mean by a compact one, but I think you mean a cylinder type mower.

If so you can buy a sharpener strip whcih easily fits on to the base of the mower, holding a firm piece of sand paper against where the blades normally pass. The mower is restarted with the sharpener in place and after a minute or so, should be as good as new. Reset your blades as described in your mowers manual, and off you go

I usually sharpen my blades several times a season to maintain an optimum cut.
