I've heard about the interference problems by running Cat5 (UTP) cable in parallel with power cables, but what about shielded cat5 cable (FTP), is this ok?

in theory screened cable is supposed to stop outside interfearance getting in, but if it doesn't work, you have just spent more on screened cable and still have to re route it.

Best to stay away from mains cables

Sadly its not possible because the path from A to B means they need to be in close proximity, unfortunately

wjm,

If you must run then near each other, try to at least keep them some inches apart. Screened cable won't always stop interference, especially if the shielding is not grounded to earth. In some circumstances it can make it worse (acts as an aerial)

Also it is against wiring regs to have them together - the data cables are not insulated to 240V.

Cheers

Paul
