Hi I had a plumber move a rad in a bathroom but as it hadnt been tiled or decide style we asked him to leave the pipes coming up as the rad would need to be measured and fitted at a later date, so I just have 2 capped off pipes sticking up throught the floor, the work has been completed now and I'm ready to for the rad, I was under the impression from the plumber ( who has since gone belly up) that I could bung the tank tho cause vacuum so I'm able to cut the tops of the 15mm copper and fit the valves ready for the rad and not have to drain the whole system ( I have 19 rads in the house in total thus I don't want to drain if I don't have too) just been up to have a look and the expansion tank doesn't have a vent, just and overflow, the feed in from the main cold water tank and the feed out but also I've noticed that the rads in the bathroom only come on with the hot water and I have found a tap in the airing cupboard marked up B RADS as pictured, so pressuming it means bathroom radiators would turning this off stop the water to the bathroom radiators so I could carry out fitting the TRV ? Thank you for any help

Could be. Turn it off and check if the water stops with the cap loosened. What type of cap is it?

The valve will only stop circulation to the rad - still need to plug the feed in the F+E cistern

Be very careful too, gate valves don't like being on CH pipework longterm as they can block and jam if any deposits are caught.

Should never have been soldered caps, should have been left with valves on them to avoid exactly this. All you can do is try it. Luckily though if it is open vent then bunging the F&E will minimise any water from the rad pipes and your finger will be able to stop the pipe to allow a valve to be fitted. Turn all the other rads off too, then cut the caps.

The other though is how much pipe has been left for the new rad ,as you will obviously lose some when cutting off the caps.
