New beam advice

I’m wondering if someone can set my mind at ease.
Just had a steel beam fitted following removal of a supporting wall.
I have noticed that the concrete blocks above are now sat on the joists only… is this acceptable?

It's normal practice to brick up between the joists, so that the weight of the inner skin is supported directly by the steel. It also ensures that the cavity is completely closed, so that a fire in the room below cannot spread up the cavity.
Have a word with your Inspector if you're wary of bringing it up with the builder yourself.

The worrying part is that the BCO has already inspected this. I only just spotted this and didn’t feel it was quite right.

Instruct the builders that you want it done properly and the joists built in, not built on.

Maybe he is assuming that the gaps are yet to be bricked up tight to the underside of the blockwork?
Maybe have a word with him before the ceiling and beam are plastered.

I Really appreciate the advice.

I wasn't around for the inspection, so I'm not certain if it was flagged with the builders. I really hope it was or it'll dent my confidence in the inspections to date.

I have asked for the builders opinion on the matter and they are going to take a look later.
