Currently have a very old Chaffoteaux boiler (open vented, fully pumped system with hotwater tank). No idea how old, as have only being in the place for 6 months, but am guessing it was the original boiler when the building was converted about 27 years ago.
So not surprising that its decided to start playing up:
boiler stat has to be on full for boiler to work
Pilot light has started going out
Boiler doesn't always fire up even when the circulation water is cold.
Could probably get it all fixed, but am thinking the boiler has done well and should be retired. Question is with what, and by whom
Firstly, its a 2nd floor flat, there is a dedicated cold water tank and CH top up tank in the loft for the flat. The rising mains pressure appears to be good (have not measured it), and are no power showers or other pumped HW devices. and we are likely to move out within the year and possibly rent the place out.
So immediate thought is rip out the boiler and HW tank and put in a new Combi? This should improve the measly shower pressure we get at the moment slightly and clear out some cupboard space
Or put in a coventional boiler and keep the HW tank (and then put a pump in to improve the shower).
Any pros and Cons for those options? or any other options
Also, any manufactueres to be avoided or recommended
Finally, by whom. I see BG are offering £300 trade in, plus free cover for the first year (handy for a place rented out), but I suspect they are making up this in their prices? We are in Croydon, so any recommendations for good local installers (may also need to do some masonry as the current flue is about 1ft square, so a modern flue would leave a big hole behind!)
