I am looking to convert my combi boiler to a system boiler soon. I have started looking around at different types of boilers, makes models etc and have narrowed it down to three main manufacturers that I am considering.

Atag, Viessmann, and Remeha - my problem is when I use the online calculator to work out the KW I should look for in a boiler it advises me that I should use a 60KW boiler, which clearly means I must be making a mistake somewhere.

Is there a simpler way to calculate the requirement?

We are in an end of terrace house, 3 floors with currently 12 radiators (although I want to increase this to 13 or 14 possibly.

The windows are single glazed and sash, although the largest wall (being the end terrace wall) has cavity wall insulation - the others don't.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would have thought that your first priority would be to get full cavity and loft insulation plus double glazing.

Thank you for your helpful remarks! I didn't say I didn't have loft insulation!

Because of the size of the house they will not cover any grant to the remainder walls for the wall insulation.

As for the windows I have started replacing them and I am not able to install UPVC nor do I want to - hence why I can't afford to replace each and every window at the same time considering it would cost over £40,000 for all of them!

If you have an end of terrace house with a house that size I would have thought that a 60Kw boiler would have been about right. What Combi have you got and does it give enough heat out for the heating at the moment?.

Spraggo you having a laugh? you would be lucky if you need 18kw in that house size

Put 2 60Kw boilers in, then when one packs up in 12 months the other can take over, that will give you 2 years of heating.

Currently have a 28cdi Worcester - it is around 12 years old. It heats the house adequately - although this has improved slightly after flushing the system. It still has it's moments when it is really cold outside you have to light the open fire to get heat in the house.

Your existing 28cdi has a rating of 24Kw, if you say it heats the house adequately then allowing for hot water and extra Rads a 35kw boiler should be plenty.

did you use the whole house calculator ? it only goes up to 25kw, after that its useless, it would be better to work out each room requirement (make sure your rads arent undersized) and then decide what boiler you need.

Yes I used the whole house calculator - I was looking at the Atag A320s system - got a quote for it and not too bad at around £700 - although the Q is better from my understanding but that is considerably more at around @£1300.

Has anyone fitted one of these? Can they fit into a kitchen unit? Which controller is better the Brain Q or the Mad Q?

...and finally which cylinder would people recommend?
