My old (almost 30 year old) boiler has finally died. I want the new boiler to go on an outside wall in the garden. I obviously want the timer to be inside my flat so i don't have to go outside when it's raining to set it. My plumber however has said that all boilers have their timers built-in and that it's not possible to have the timer in a different location.

Is this true?

The customer is always right.

You can have your timer put next to your thermostat or anywhere you like.
Obviously he can't be bothered to run the cable.
Get another quote :)

have u spoken to the plumber about a plastic cover for the boiler (black bin liner would do !)

i take it its going in a shed or similar ?

I asked the plumber about a covering for the proposed new boiler but he said "I don't do carpentry".

Given your replies I won't be calling him back
Incidentally, his quote for the combined boiler was £1600. I don't know if this is reasonable or not but I will be getting further quotes.

I've arranged for British Gas to send someone to give me a quote and advise on the various options but that's over a week away. In the meantime we have no hot water or heat.

get more quotes/advice...that way u will work out the best options and prices and might also get someone who could fit it soon also...

i here the big freeze is coming !!

But how do you know who's competent and who's not?
Apart from the plumber I mentioned earlier I don't know any others. Is it just a case of pot luck??

if no one can recommend then yesits pot luck who will knock on ur door...but u can make an assesment once they are in the house...

Ask questions about the job u want doing...do you like them (carefull here, they could still be crap at the job)...are they corgi reg ?

Dont always go for the cheapest...go midrange..with a boiler you are happy with/or recommended to fit with ur lifestyle. system flush and benchmarked

go to corgi site and look up installers. It will give uyou your local corgi installer. As for your timer, you can install a remote wireless programmer+roomstat,or programmable roomstat. Life is boring when one is sane. ;)
