The thickness of the wall running at 90 degrees to it
 
hi static...this measurement ,is that where i start the opening or where the lintel must start ie pushing the door another 6 inches cheers

Its a measurement to the structural opening, so where the doorframe starts. :)
 
That is according to the strict rule of the regs, but is virtually no longer adhered to there are hundreds of doorways built on new builds that don't comply with this. In fact a couple of years ago I split a house into two flats this involved moving the doorway over adjacent to the flanking wall I queried this with BC and they admitted that this was virtually ignored providing there was sufficient wall still above the doorway.
 
Yep, you dont have to build stuff to the building regs. But dont then complain afterwards when you have to change it or the wall fails.

New build is alot different, as the engineer is liable to justify the stability of the structure and has a fat insurance policy for when/if they get it wrong.
