Hi guys,
I am planning to add an external door to the back of my single skin brick garage to allow easier access.
I work in maintenance so I’m fairly handy and have most the tools I’ll need so confident enough to take this on but just want to sanity check a few things before starting!
I plan to carry out the following steps:
1. Cut out a row of bricks to install lintel, allowing 150mm overhang either side of where door will be. I wasn’t planning on propping the brickwork above lintel gap when installing, there will be approx 6 courses of brick above the lintel and there is no load on this part of the building. Is this a good idea?
2. Cut out hole for door and frame allowing 5mm gap around for fitting. Will use a stihl saw for this.
3. Fit up frame and shim/pack around gap ensuring level. Fix into place with masonry fittings, fill rest of the gap with expanding foam and cut back when dry.
I think this covers everything, seems fairly straight forward on paper! Any advice or suggestions would be great. Pictures attached for reference.
Just to note, I will be purchasing a ‘pre hung’ door, hopefully this will make fitting a little bit more straightforward.
Cheers
