Currently our house has the original Victorian pine boards stripped and varnished. We need a new look and are fed up with those huge gaps so are thinking of buying solid 22mm oak wooden boards (tongue and grooved for us) to replace them.

Is it okay to just put these oak boards on top of the existing old pine wooden boards or should we just remove and attach our new boards directly to the joists?

What's best?

So you're double posting. This is not a good idea as it causes confusion.

Best thing is to carefully lift the existing boards and relay close together. Why by an old house and then want a new look? Too much watching tv makeover progs? You will devalue your property.
