Fridge light went out, went to replace it with identical bulb purchased at the same time as the one in situ. Switched fridge back on, an under counter Hotpoint 29 yrs old, bulb went bang, tripped all the sockets, fuse box in garage, electric door so had to wind that up manually, 1st time ever, to reset switch. Removed said bulb, fridge still works. What could have caused this to happen?

I've consulted the oracle. He says......
Probably faulty bulb. Put a new one in and see. If the same thing happens then maybe the lamp holder has a fault.
