Hi all, I’m getting really confused with the wiring in my bedroom! I tried to replace an old light fitting with a new one yesterday.

I noticed that one of the N wires was seperate from the other 2 - so I have taped it as presumed this would be something to do with the light switch. The new light fitting has tiny connectors- would be impossible to fit 3 wires into it, so I removed these and attached larger connectors.

When I connected the new light- it worked, turned off the light and it tripped my RCD.

I then removed the light completely as ran out of daylight, and now the ceiling lights in the next room isn’t working either

any help would be greatly appreciated

The other rooms stopped because the wires are now parted, do not join all the blacks together, the black on its own is seperated for a reason

All 3 reds together but connected to nothing else

The black on its own that you marked with tap is the live to your new light.

The other 2 blacks which were together stay together to be neutral to your new light

The 3 earth wires stay together and should be sleeved with green and yellow sleeving and if required connect to an earth connexion on your new light.

Thank you for having the sense to mark the single black with tape.

Thanks a lot, really helpful! I’ll have another go tomorrow
