I have just put up a partition wall. I have used Bluehawk jointing filler and tape for the joins, but no matter how hard I sand its still a very poor finish

It is very uneven because of the recess on the edges of the plasterboard and the wall it joins and has variences of about 3mm. the obvious (but expensive) thing to do would be to get a plasterer, but are there any products out there that anyone can recommend? I've seen this new polycell 'smoothover' but don't want to waste £15.00 on it if it won't do the job.
