New staircase fitted.....

just had out new oak staircase fitted and carpeted, however, to fit the new staircase the guys doing the work had to cut out small parts of the carpet at the bottom of the stairs (see attached pic). The carpet fitters have said they don't recommend filling in the gaps in the carpet as it will look pretty awful, if we can't do this then any other ideas as to what can be done would be massively appreciated??

Obvious solution is to fit a new carpet there. Dont get why you wouldn't after forking out for a new staircase!

How about a slightly off the wall solution?

Have a thought about cutting the area of carpet away in front of the riser and the Newel, out to the level of the furthest point of the Stringer on the wall?

OK Drastic!

Then think about fitting a piece of Oak, same colour as the stair on the floor to in effect frame the new stair? all round.

It is an option? A well known Architect once told me if there is a, shall we call it, a blunder, make a feature of it??

i had similar thoughts but as the stairs are carpeted it will be an oasis off wood in a carpet jungle
you may get away with say a "D" shape or similar as a feature but a oblong wont cut it

Blame lies with the stair fitters. Did you agree to this? Why on earth did they just not roll back the carpet to fix the stairs, then refit it? There does not appear to have been any need to cut out a section of carpet other than laziness.

Whoever fitted the stairs takes the weight.

But as regards the solutions offered above: the thing is that off-cuts or piecing-in (of riser material) of carpet are not safe options - the carpet should flow around the base of the flight tight to the first riser in one piece.

That carpet appears to have had a little wear - perhaps even a shampoo. My suggestion would be to lift it from that room/hallway (?) and re-fit it elsewhere, & then lay a new floor covering.
