I decided to give plumping in my new washing machine a go as the company i bought it from refused to plumb it in as it needed an extended waste pipe.
I disconnected the old one and using the extended waste pipe from the old machine, I connected the new one up. The only problem was that I found it hard to get the part used to connect the old waste pipe to the new pipe(dont know what its called??) to connect fit back into the old waste pipe. I managed to force it a half to three quarters the way on. I tried greasing it with washing up liquid and used the pipe tightener to finish the job but it is still slightly leaking.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?? Thanks

Are you saying you extended the new waste outlet from the machine with the old one and it is now leaking

Have you moved the machine away from its original position and the new waste outlet is not long enough.

Post back with all details as I am not sure what you are trying to do. ;)

The old machine had its waste pipe connected to an extension which leads out to the outside. I removed old machine and its waste pipe and left the extension there. The extension was connected to waste pipe using a plastic connector (i dont know a proper name for this connector) which was inserted into both waste pipes and then tighteners were used to keep everything fitted nicely and not leaking.

I have inserted the connecter into the waste pipe of new washing machine and tightened and this is fine and then i have put the other end of the connecter back into the extension (where it was before with old machine) and have tightened but I cannot get the connector into the pipe fully at this end and it is now leaking. I have tried greasing it but to no avail.

try to post a picture for more help.

also answer these :?: 's

1 the pipe which is leaking, (the extension piece), is this the flexible 20mm diameter type similar to that which comes out of the washing machine or the fixed / rigid 32 or 40mm diameter type. :?:

2 "tighteners" are these metal ring type things with a nut which can be turned with a screw driver (jubilee clips) :?:

If the answer to Q 1 is flex type, then the supplier of the new machine refused to fit it possibly because of concerns over that length of narrow pipe putting a strain on the pump inside the washing machine.

If you want to go ahead with the old arrangement then I can only think of using some silicone round the outside of the connecting piece before inserting it into the pipe. Dry it well, assemble the parts, tighten the "tighteners" and leave for 24 hour to cure.

Brumylad. Thanks for your help. That is very helpful.
Yes the extension is the flex type and yes i am talking about jubilee clips.

One last question, where would you suggest getting all these materials? Do I need to go to specialist buidling shop or would somewhere like Homebase supply these. Thanks

Phone the plumbers merchants and tell them what you propose to do and they should be able to help you :D
