Hello

I've been replacing the old light switches with dimmer switches. Previously, the old light switches were clearly labelled, however the switch in the bedroom appears to have 2 red wires going to two different terminals, both labelled "1" (photo attached).

I was expecting an "L1" and "Com". How do I tell which wire goes to the "com" terminal in the new switch?

Sorry if it is a really dumb question!

It doesn't matter.

You could determine which of the Reds is the supply if you needed to.

The old switch is a two-pole one for switching a Neutral as well - which hasn't been done if that is what the black wire is.

Thanks for replying so quickly. So I can place either wire in the "Com" terminal of the new switch and I'm not going to blow something up?

Out of curiosity, why might have the previous owners choosen this arrangement?

Kind regardsPaul

Bought wrong switch, already had it in a drawer, it's a switch, no reason. :)

Just put a blob of tipex on the top wire and fit it to the top of your new switch. See that the writing is the right way up and you can't go wrong.
Alternatively just a wire in each hole and if the switch is the wrong way round, i.e. up is on and down is off, you can either swivel the switch or swap the wires over. The only danger is if you try doing it with the power still on.

It's a dimmer.

When i swap a switch with singles i just cut the end off the permanent feed and leave the copper showing on the switch live
