Hi Guys

I hope somebody can help, will be very grateful if you can. As we are now entering winter, I thought I would stick the central heating on but there is a problem. None of the heaters are warming up, both upstairs and downstairs but I am getting hot water without any problems. I am not an expert on this matters (as I guess u would of worked out, hee hee). There are three main pipes coming out of the bottom of the boiler two are close together and are boiling hot, I imagine this is the hot water, one of these pipes has some sort of valve on it. The other pipe is only warm at best, I assume this is the CH but not sure. The raditors have been bleeded but no joy. Do you have any ideas on what I can do next?. Is it worth bleeding the circulation system to solve the problem. I can send pics of the system if this helps.

Thanks for any help that you can give

Martin

First thing is the pump, they stick if not used, and you probably have "gravity" circulation for hot water which hasn't needed a pump. Do a search on PUMP - plenty in the last couple of days.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I know this is really basic stuff for you. But do u know where exactly the pump is, what it look like. What I have also noticed is, what I believe to be the CH pipe coming out the boiler. The top part of the pipe is fairly hot but when it gets to the bend in the pipe, the heat seems to disappear, the rest of the pipe is cold. Don't know if this could pinpoint the problem

Thanks again

Pumps can be in darned funny places. A friend found theirs under the middle of the living room boards. Glad I lived too far away!
Look in screwfix or somesuch for pump pictures.

Thanks for your reply guys

I think, I have found the pump. It's a grundfos UPS 15-50 130, can provide the part number if you need. I have bleeded all the rads with no joy. What do u think my next stage should be, all rads are stone cold at the moment both upstairs and down. Bleed the system? Or is there somethin easier before this stage

Thanks

Martin

oh yea, doh!!!. Just checked, does not give any indication that the unit is running. No noise or anything but the pump is very hot. Sometimes I do hear humming noise but this comes and goes. May just be water running though the pipes.

cheers

Martin

undo the big silver screw in the middle you will get some water out insert a small screw driver and try to turn the shaft it may suddenly leap into life if not you will have to replace pump from your description sounds like its stuck its hot cos the motor windings are trying to turn it :D

Hi Kev

Cheers for your fantastic advice!!!!!! This was the cause of the problem, once I completed the steps you gave in your last post, the pump burst into life again. All my rads are now back in action, I can't thank you enough for all your help and patience. I'll know this for next time

I am very grateful for all your assistance in this
