No hot water from conventional gas boiler (Ideal Classic)

Hi all

Need help solving a hot water problem.
Ideal Classic FF260 boiler does not fire up to provide domestic hot water but will fire up and heat radiators for central heating (but still no hot water)

I have changed cylinder thermostat and racked up to max temp but this made no difference - boiler still not firing

Boiler is Ideal Classic FF260
2 valve system (Honeywell V403H1106 motorised units)
Programmer/timer is Honeywell 24hr unit (possibly ST699)
Cylinder thermostat is Honeywell L641 (replaced new today!)

Any help appreciated

I expect that either the HW motor valve is faulty or you have wrongly wired the new HW thermostat.

Check that the motorised valve actually operates when you switch on hot water - chances are that it doesn't.

If this is the case, push the manual actuator into the open position and clip onto the recess to keep it open. This should operate the microswitch to fire the boiler.

If this doesn't work, then at least you will have hot water as long as the central heating is on. Which isn't too good at the moment.

The cylinder thermostat is correctly wired (simply replaced using existing cable and connections) so suspect motoriosed valve may be faulty - will try this when heating cools a bit.

NO!
Operating the manual lever on a motorised valve will NOT in most cases close the switch to operate the system. Honeywell valves are SPECIFICALLY designed so that the switch will ONLY operate when the motor opens the valve.

Some makes, in particular the Siemens valve that looks somewhat like the Honeywell one, DO operate the switch when opened and latched manually.

Manually operating the valve did not fire up the boiler so assume micro switch has not been tripped.

Does this indicate that the Honeywell valve on thehot water cylinder feed is faulty and needs replacing?

PS - valve is definitely Honeywell type V403H1106

Didn't you read what John said just above your last reply?

The Honeywell valve does NOT operate its microswitch when you move the lever. Its designed that way!

Move the lever and lock it in manual slot and you can get HW when your CH is on.

Inside the motor valve is a motor! If you were really clever you could measure its resistance and see if its open circuit. Should be 2-4 K. Only do this if you are competent!

If you like fiddly things, detach the motor and see if it turns when the system is powered. If it does not AND there is 230v across its leads then its failed and can be replaced on its own if you are competent to work on 230 vac.

PS By the way you seem to have quoted the wrong number for the valve. Its actually a 4043 I expect !!!

check your header tank has not run dry, sometimes ball valve sticks in position.

Motorized valve has power but is not turning so looks as thougfh I will have to invest in a replacement.

Apols to Tony for being numerically dyslexic - valve is 4043.

Header tank is OK so not a problem

Thanks to all for their help.

Problem solved by fitting new Honeywell powerhead to motorised valve (too lazy to just fit motor)

Hot water now back to normal.
