My mum rang me last week to say she was without hot water, so I popped over at the weekend to check it out. She has a WB Greenstar Ri boiler, and a 3 port valve running up to a vented cylinder. It seemed to me like the hot water was stuck in a loop sending it to the pump and back to the valve again. Pump was overheating and making a noise. Overriding the valve seemed to solve it so to me looked like the culprit. Told her to get a local lad in and get it swapped out. She rang someone the next day who came out that evening and said he knew exactly what it was, quoted her a higher price than I'd expect but shes not one for ringing around so said yes and he came back next day to do the work. Didnt go to plan, he replaced the valve, but the water wasnt reaching the cylinder still and she said he spent several hours there trying to sort it. In the end told her she needed some more new parts at more cost and would come the next day.
I rang her the following evening to ask if it was fixed and she said he had added more parts and was still not working so had gone home after another half day after telling her the system probably needs a flush for £200 and if its not that then she probably needs a new cylinder. He said the heating works fine (doesnt the hot water have to pass through the cylinder to get to the rads?) Water tank in loft is fine and cold water is getting to it.
Now I have no problem with professionals earning a living, thats why they get certified, but hes replaced several parts now obviously at marked up prices and still not fixed the problem and yet wants another £200 to try yet something else without being 100% sure.
Anyone any idea what the actual problem could be, I know without looking at it person its just pot luck having a guess but the bills racking up now and at this stage I have no idea if this lad knows what he's doing. I rang and spoke to him and he's confident a flush will solve it but if it doesnt its more money to buy yet more parts... Seems like he's guessing more than anything or is it perfectly normal to just replace everything along the chain until there's no old stuff left
Forgive my ignorance lads, I havent had to deal with heating engineers for a long time even though I'm in construction myself.
