When you turn the dial you should hear it clicking on and off. When the program is set for hot water the power goes to the stat which switches the power to the terminal that connects to the boiler live.

You haven't told us anything about your boiler, how many valves... - all the rest. Want us to guess?! See Breezer's fixed post at the top.

how many valves. i would have to guess as well

Assuming you have a hot water cylinder, look round it for boxy things about 3" by 3" by 5" long with brassy a bit underneath. Expect 2 or 3 pipes going to the brass bit.
Also - could you put your heating on without the hot water, i mean by design (even if it isn't working now)?

At least you can tell us what sort of/make/model of boiler you have, surely!

hi the boiler is a glow worm hideawayand it as one boxy thingy near the cylinder which ive switched to manual to try that way but still didnt work
i can put the heating on as normal.

Hah, rightyhoe. Murraysnudge's comments all apply then IF the boxy thing has 3 pipes going into it. So does the cylinder stat click?

What about the programmer - what make/model is that - could be quite old now. Many of them have relays inside which click, too so does the HW side sound the same as the heating side?

It's going to be difficult to get much further without using a meter and some electrical knowledge.

Depending on that valve type, there are ways to get your HW on while you sort things out, so look at it again.
