Hi I have a problem with my boiler and have no hot water - the heating still works but the l.e.d for hot water is not even lit. Although there is no fault light flashing. I had a look online for any explanations and saw it might be the diaphragm. I've had someone out this morn who said its not the diaphragm, it needs a new diverter valve costing £127+vat and £40 to fit. Also my friends hubbys friend has said (without even looking at the boiler) it will def be the diaphragm and will cost £65 for part including fitting! So now im totally confused. For a start if it was the diaphragm I read that these were only £10 and could be fitted in a couple of mins. Can anyone shed any light? The boiler is a baxi 105e combi boiler. Thanks.

There are several possible causes of the boiler not responding to a demand for hot water.

Even if the diaphragm is needed then a professional is still going to charge for diagnosing and repairing.

If it was a professional who you called out then I don't think he is right and if he did replace the diverter valve then ensure you are NOT going to have to pay for it if it does not cure the fault ( which it will not be likely to! ).

Also there is so much work to do to replace the diverter that I cannot see many professionals doing all that work for just £40.

Thanks Tony! So do you think the £65 is reasonable for replacing diaphragm. I have just spoke to him and he said 9/10 times that is the problem & will have a look tomorrow. They are both professionals in the trade and also both came recommended by friends. But I am always dubious of costs (one has a wedding to pay for!) And don't like to think im being ripped off. I thought it was a bit strange cos when I'd searched online nothing seemed to come up saying diverter valve! Thanks again for the advice, Gayle.

I charge £106 to diagnose the problem and replace the diaphragm but that includes a service.

But I find that the diaphragm is only the problem in about 40% of the cases I see.

London prices though Tony lol! That last bit doesn't sound as promising. Just out of interest what do u charge for supply & fitting a new boiler? I've been quoted £1300 for a new baxi duotec boiler fitted. Not sure whether this may be the route to go down (already spent £300 on repairs to the boiler just before Christmas!).

Yeah it only takes a minute to change so they should only charge you £5 for fitting if that  because travelling to and from your property doesn't cost time and money and neither does going to collect the part but you could probably get it of da net for 6 squid.
Don't worry about our overheads as soon as we tell gas safe, public liability insurers, van insurers, tax man and petrol station that a job were doing is only going to take a couple of minutes they gives us a huge discount and we don't have to pay as much!

Well dean7445 that was bloody useful! Ru glad you got that off your chest? I was only asking as I want to double check im not being ripped off. And as it happens they live on my estate so not much travelling expenses there. Go and irritate someone else!
