I am replacing light switch in bedroom. There is just one cable to connect to new switch. The new switch has L1, L2, L3. I did a direct replacement and light didn't work. I changed the bulb, put the old switch back and it still didn't work. tried the new switch on another light and it worked so the new switch is fine.

Can the only answer be that there is no power coming to the switch for some reason? All other lights in house work. If there is no power, how can that be and what is the ultimate repair?

Maybe it is something really obvious/

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Have you a meter of any description to test if voltage is present at the ceiling rose/light?

When you say one cable is that one cable (Twin & earth) with three wires (red/black and earth)?

If this is Twin and Earth which colour wire did you put in which terminal.
If red went into the Com terminal and black into L1 in the old switch then for the new switch red = L1 and black = L2.

Like others have said , Check for Power at the Cables with a Meter ideally , If the Switch is "back to back" with another Room the Feed/Live may have been picked up from the other Rooms Switch , it may have worked loose with the Work you have done on this Switch , worth a check if no Power at the Switch , or the Problem lies at the Celing Rose or a JB

Simple test. No meter needed.

Turn power off.

Join the two wires together (red & black?

Restore power

Does light come on? If so you havent wired the switch up properly
If light doesnt come on then there's a problem somewhere else but I would dfind it a very strange co-incidence that the light suddenly fails when you've messed around with the switch wiring.
Something to look out for is a conductor broken inside the insulation. This happens sometimes when wires get crammed behind switches.

Do the above first and then report back.

PS the correct connections on the new switch would be red on L1 and black on L2.
