No wifi coonection on laptop

My laptop for some reason has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet, I have a wireless router feeding this and another desktop, the desktop is connecting O.K.,
If I attempt a Windows network diagnosis check on the laptop It tells me that a Ethernet cable is unplugged yet there is no cables to unplug as it is wireless. Anyone got any solutions to this problem I would be grateful.

Have you accidentally switched off the wireless radio? This is either a button on the function keys (see below) or you might have a dedicated button/switch on the top of the keyboard or side of the laptop etc...

Failing that can you tell me what laptop make/model, which version of windows you are running.


Sometimes in order to toggle this wireless you need to press the Function/FN/Func. button (usually same colour as the icon) at the same time

E.g. example below might be FN+F2

Hi thanks for reply, the radio button is switched on and it is glowing blue, the laptop make/model is HP/ProtectSmart running Windows 8.

Ok, you should have a network icon in the bottom right hand side next to the clock. It will be something like these

Can you tell me which you see (if any) they might be hidden icons so you need to click the arrow that shows more.

If it looks like the first icon can you tell me which of these it looks like:

Yes the icon is like the like the one in your first example, a square screen with a smaller screen in the top left hand corner, when I select this it comes up "Network settings" and A picture of an aircraft saying "Flight mode", yet the flight mode button is switched to off.

Do you have a network cabled plugged in? Assuming maybe until the wireless issue is resolved? Ehen you click the icon and can see the network settings, can you see section called "connections" and then further down "WiFi" ? do you see a list of available wireless connections?

The laptop connects O.K. when using a network cable, when I then click on the icon it comes up with a list of items e.g. Status, Ethernet, Dial-up, VPN, Flight mode etc but can`t see "connections or "WiFi".

It sounds like either the wireless is disabled or off. Can you right click that network icon and then go to network and sharing center and then click change adapter settings. Do you see a connection for wifi? might be greyed out or says not connected? If possible take a screenshot and upload.

It shows WiFi with a double blue screen with green bars showing full strength signal but has a red cross showing as well,

Red cross means its not connected but that could be because your also connected via the Ethernet cable. Can you try unplug the Ethernet cable, wait 30 seconds then double click the WiFi connection with the red cross and on the right hand side a menu should popup. Towards the bottom of that menu should be a list of available wireless connections that you can connect to. If you cannot see any can you move a little close to your wireless router/AP and see if it shows.

Also can you ensure the wifi is "on" as per this screenshot (it will be on that popup mentioned above)

Many thanks, I got to the screen menu as above and found that the router "Netgear 11" was not connected, now connected and problem solved, thanK you you are a star, well done.
