Personally I would say a mitre saw / chop saw would be better. Some have a depth stop.
If you are doing a few half joints. Screw a stop onto a baseboard. Have 2 short lengths of timber, use one of the short lengths to do the first cut, then put in the 2nd piece and do the second. You can always put a screw in the end of these packers, the screws can be adjusted to the exact length.
Carefully set up, it can be very accurate and repeatable.
