Prior to the following the sound was fine ,then i installed new, better grade speakers, and a DVD burner, and have since been plagued with a morse code transmission type noise. Now everything is slowing down to a creep. The computer is second hand, and on an O2 Dongle, and XP system.

As a matter of interest, the noise persists even with the speakers switched off. The computer is now permanently chuntering and clunking like Billy-ho.

Tim,
Is the noise from the case?

If so take the side off and see if it is a fan packing in, or a cable catching a fan.
Or, as it is second hand, could be the harddrive on its way out.

You are the only one here who can investigate a noise in the case.

Dave, thanks for replying.no, it doesn't seem to be anything haywire in the case. however, since earlier postings, the morse code noise is off when the speakers are off, and on constant when the speakers are on. today the speed has dropped to almost zero, this was not the case last week before enhancing the set-up.

Regarding the 'morse code'
Move any mobile phone away from the computer and the speakers.

No idea what you mean about "the speed has dropped to almost zero"
Do you mean the Startup time taken?
Do you mean the web browsing speed?
Do you mean the download speed?

A few bits of info might help
Answer the above queries.
What operating system is installed?
What browser is in use?
What are you doing when the speed drops to zero?

If all this happened since last week try a system restore to a day before you did the installs.
Are you sure that the software that you installed will work with the OS that you have?

Did you install a new DVD hard drive or just the software to burn to a DVD hard drive?

i installed a new dvd burner: LG super multi dvd rewriter.
2. op system is windows XP
3. the browser is internet explorer
4. connection to the internet takes up to half an hour
5. start up takes 10-15 mins
6. browsing takes up to 15 mins for a page change
7. i haven't yet downloaded anything - as far as i know.

Thanks Matty, actually, when i say i'm doing this or that it's a friend who comes over with 10 cents more computer knowledge than me.

More news from the long march. I will be re-installing the system and the sound card, in the meantime, i've noticed that when the speakers are positioned away from the case the noise lessens significantly.
However, is there some way of extending the speaker cables - a pick up cable or something?

sounds like "feedback from the speakers" some speakers have strong magnets.move them away as far as possible, have you tried disconnecting them and see how it runs then.

thanks. yes i've switched and unplugged the speakers, and then there is no distorting sound. but, i'm wondering how i can extend the speaker cables - they are hard wired into the speakers

tim, the noise on the speakers is not coming from a mobile phone but is being generated by the o2 dongle which is essentially a mobile phone. The poorly shielded speakers are picking up the radiation from the o2 dongle.

To remedy this I suggest you buy a usb extension cable which you can use to increase the distance between the o2 dongle and the speakers.

Want proof? Remove the dongle from the pc.
