Hello All,

In May of this year we had a combi boiler installed. It is fantastic and means that we now can afford to run the central heating!

Given the recent cold weather we have had the heating on a few times recently. Now the problem - every now and again the thermostatic radiator valves "scream". Literally! It's a horrible noise that can be heard throughout the house. All that it takes to stop the noise is a slight turn either way on the control. It isn't the same valve every time and I've tried bleeding the radiators.

Has anyone else heard of this happening and could offer some advice?

Common problem

The valves need to be 2-way to run any chance of them being silent.

The non-2-way use a metal valve, and it is this that makes the noise at the point of just shutting.

Try alternatives. Westherms are very good, and not expensive.

'fraid so. Need to be in the right frame of mind...

What make are the current ones??

danfoss are a good make and not usally any trouble dont go to the expense of changing them all try adding central heating additive

When the boiler was fitted the plumber put some inhibitor in - is this the additive you mean?

You could also check with your installer to see if he installed an automatic bypass valve. These reduce the noise you mentioned by opening up as the thermostatic radiator valves close down. This then maintains a constant differential pressure at the radiators, which can be set low enough to prevent the noise when the TRVs are nearly closed. It would also make life easier on your boiler. They are required under part L of the building regulations for domestic heating systems installed, or modified, after 1 April 2002.
