Hi,
I have a noise problem with my pipes and am not sure whether it's water hammer or air in the pipes or something else. I live in a semi-detached house and hear noises all the time in the space between the two houses. It sounds like water flowing through the pipes and the sound travels upwards from the basement all the way to the 3rd floor of the house. I think that the both houses are properly insulated since I can't hear anything from my neighbors except for these pipes. However, it annoyingly happens all the time whether or not I'm using the water and it occurs all the time in the middle of the night when I'm sure myself or my neighbors aren't doing anything at all.
The other thing is that I only hear these noises in the spring, summer, and fall and very rarely in the cold winter. I'm wondering if it could also be associated with use of my split-system heat pump/air conditioner? The A/C is the only thing that gets used in the spring and summer but even if it's off, I still hear the noise in the pipes but less frequently.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The noise is really starting to bother us and especially now since the baby's room is right beside the wall where the pipes are and it's woken her up a few times.
Thanks,
Tony
